Getting Started with Drawing People
This book builds on the seven laws of perspective taught in McIntyre's
Drawing Textbook. It is highly recommended that students start with this foundational course. Even for artists with strong drawing skills, the seven laws are necessary for mastering the skills taught in this book.
It is possible for a student to go from the
The Drawing Textbook into
The Best Book on Drawing People. If a student has not mastered the seven laws of perspective, we recommend you consider
Year Two of McIntyre's Audio Visual Drawing Program. These four books will provide significant practice in applying the principles of drawing.

What is Covered In "The Best Book on Drawing People"
Advanced Skills
Building on the seven laws of perspective, the Drawing People book adds these advanced skills:
- Taper
- Tilt
- Contrast
- Unity
- Variety
- Silhouette
- Line of Action
As with other McIntyre drawing books, the first lessons start simple. In this book it starts with the skill of tapering. From a simple potato pan, tapering is added as well as the application of the other laws of perspective. Voila! A human shape emerges on the paper.
The tapering is added to the head and limbs and a more distinct person develops.
Step-by-step more skills are added and the drawings become more advanced. Several activities are provided for each rule. Half of the book (48 lessons) are dedicated to the seven skills mentioned above.
Drawing parts of the Human Body
The second half of the book is dedicated to the different parts of the human body.
The skeleton gives the body its shape. Lessons will teach these features:
- Head Bones
- Body Bones
- Surface Lines
- Muscles and Tendons
- Features and Ears
- Legs and Feet
- Clothing Wrinkles
- Hair
- Expressions and Attitude
Facial features and hair are added to create individuals with expression and action.
