Content Questions
We provide valuable pointer questions that do much more than just double check that the student read the chapter (though they do do that too.) Our questions:
- Highlight the important action in each chapter
- Pin point important clues to character development and literary analysis
- Have discussion question stems
You may chose, if you prefer, to use just the stem of the question as a discussion starter rather than a multiple choice question.
Literary Elements
Motifs
All of the Kaleidos unit studies make literature analysis fun and easy to do.
This book provides the perfect example of a motif, a reoccuring event tied to the theme. Repeatedly, the ship's captain tells him to, "Carry On." Two other repeating motifs are present in the book (his method for learning new languages and his method of notebooking about trades associated with sailing.)
Themes and Purpose
Motifs point to themes. Students can easily identify perseverence as the theme of the book.
A little practice is given in identifying (and developing one's own) motifs, themes, and symbols; as well as themes, moral of the story, and purpose of the story.
Other Literary Elements
These literary elements are also presented in this story:
- Setting
